Wykeland

Booklet

In 2017 I was commissioned to design a leaflet to summarise Wykeland’s sponsorship and involvement in arts and culture.

My brief was to create something which would be bold, colourful and along similar lines to the City of Culture designs.

Source imagery was a mixed bag, varying wildly in quality and choice, meaning that some layout was by necessity rather than an aesthetic decision.

The booklet also featured drawings generated during a school-based project which I ran for Wykeland, helping to enhance their regeneration process.

Wireframes and Branding

In 2016 I was approached by a local entrepreneur who wanted my assistance in designing wireframes for a proposed app.

Some initial design work had already been carried out but no layered files were available. I recreated the originals and , during 2016 / 2017, went on to build over 100 new files to demonstrate the various screens and functionality of the app.

In 2018, further design work went out to tender but I didn’t apply due to time constraints from other projects, applying instead to create a short promo animation and was successful.

The client subsequently requested that I resume any further design work rather than the company which stepped in as she found me much easier to work with, missing the level of feedback and understanding I brought to the project. I have since completed over 300 pages of mobile designs and 230 ingredients renders.

As other creatives became involved in the development of the app, website and social media it became necessary to create a branding document, helping to ensure that design continuity was being maintained. The document itself is concise and to the point, with clear guidelines for the logo, typography and palette.

Branding

In 2021 I carried out some branding work for a fledgling business aiming to enter the glamping market. I worked with them on their brand, and created several website mockups looking to evoke a feeling of a high quality and approachable operation.

In addition, I created a bank of isometric assets which could be used by other creatives to enhance social media or the eventual website.

Posters / flyers / album artwork

I’m always on the lookout for ways to make artwork stand out from the norm, using colour palettes which are pleasing to the eye. Sometimes, social media just won’t reach a target audience the way a trusty poster can.

Poster work can be much more challenging than billboards due to the volume of information which clients often want (and need) to include.

Logos

I’ve created many logos during my freelance career, for public and private sector clients. It’s always a fine balance between a client’s desires, practicality and my recommendations. The final result is not always the most aesthetic but it’s ultimately the client’s choice.

Coffee on the Hoof

Logo process study

In 2016, a fledgling catering company approached me for a logo, with the 1st image as a reference. I initially created something to closely match their drawing but had to invert the horseshoe (unlucky otherwise) and needed to move the lettering from within the outline of the shoe to make it cleaner and more legible from a distance.

Having an actual coffee cup suddenly seemed unnecessary so I explored the concept of just using the shoe (2nd image). I liked the simplicity and thought it gave it a gourmet air.

The client liked the idea but wanted to see something like the 3rd image instead, thinking that the public wouldn’t comprehend the more abstract idea.

Keen to retain my concept, I came up with a compromise (4th image) and the client loved it. They also announced that it needed to be green and would be going on a green background! I built a 3D horse box and used it to demonstrate different colour options - the image shown prompted the client to switch to a darker green (even if I couldn’t persuade them to go for a coffee coloured theme).

Product visualisation

I also offer a photo realistic 3D product visualisation service, building and rendering bespoke 3D models. Clients can supply artwork for labels or I can create them myself.

The cherry jar shown was built from scratch as a technical demonstration.
