CHAI Cooking

Explainer ads / social reward animations

CHAI Cooking is a fledgling app, in development with support from Hull University. It aims to help reduce food waste and assist people in transitioning to a plant-based diet.

After initially assisting with the branding process, creating over 200 pages of wireframes and making hundreds of 3D food renders, I went on to produce several animations featuring a mixture of 3D and 2D techniques. I took the supplied scripts, built and rigged the 3D models, recorded voiceovers, lip-synced, keyed the movements and then added 2D motion graphics.

Indivior

Chemical process projection

In consultation with scientists from Indivior, I created an animation of the chemical reactions which take place during their manufacture of buprenorphine. The black background is not visible when projected in the stairwell of their facility meaning that the molecules appear to float around the space.

Reckitt Benckiser

Internal PLM anim

Working via an agency, I created a series of internal animations which explained the various stages and processes of Reckitt’s PLM management system. Each piece of work was completed on a tight schedule with little time for refinement.

The Twenty Seven Club

Book promotion

I was contacted by the book’s author, Lucy Nichol, to create a short social media ad based on her specifications. It blends motion graphics, 2D cutout animation and 3D work.

Flat Cap Carnival

‘Fistful of Misery’ music video

The York-based band put out a call for an animator to interpret their Spaghetti Western style track and they chose my proposal. It was produced on a very small budget, using Synfig Studio and Motion 5 for 2D, with a small amount of 3D work thrown in. There are some parts that I’d refine if I was revisiting it but it’s entertaining - it’s not every day you get the chance to animate people riding a giant chicken and a Gila monster. You may also recognise the main protagonist…

Sonoco Trident

Product visualisation and promos

Working as part of the 3D team at Trident, I helped to produce 3D models and animations. Being more experienced in animation than some of the other team members meant that I spent part of my time on tricky sections and problem solving. For the Stella promo, I built the glass and animated the ribbon, and other team members added the finishing touches. For the Lipton ad, I built and animated the tin foil and loose tea. The RB Finish promo was done as a tutorial exercise - I taught the Trident lighting specialist some animation techniques and he showed me how to light products. He subsequently added a lemon without my input which should have been adjusted but the rest is pretty good.

Miscellaneous

Experiments and just for fun

I like to learn new techniques and try out ideas when I ever get the chance. One day, I’ll get the chance to make my animated short about a professor and a spider. One day…
